The Moose Movement at a Glance
The Loyal Order of Moose began in Louisville, Kentucky, in the spring of 1888, when Dr. John Henry Wilson organized a small group of men into a fraternal order. Early lodges appeared in Cincinnati, St. Louis, and several Indiana communities, but the organization remained small until James J. Davis joined the Crawfordsville Lodge in 1906.
Davis, a Welsh-born steelworker and labor organizer, recognized that the Moose could offer working families something they often lacked at the time: practical protection and support before government safety-net programs existed. With the title of Supreme Organizer, he helped expand Moose membership across the United States and Canada. By 1912, the organization had grown from just 247 members in two lodges to approximately 500,000 members in more than 1,000 lodges.
Warren Moose Lodge 109
Established in 1917, Warren Moose Lodge 109 has served the Warren, Pennsylvania community for more than a century. Its longevity reflects a strong tradition of fellowship, resilience, and commitment to helping others through changing times.
Today, the Warren Moose Family Center 109 continues that tradition as part of Moose International, an organization with nearly 2,000 lodges across all 50 states, Canada, Bermuda, and Great Britain. Locally, Lodge 109 supports the Warren community, the children of Mooseheart, and the seniors of Moosehaven while striving to be known as “the friendliest place in town.” Members and guests can enjoy meals, entertainment, and regional bands in a welcoming social setting.
The Women of the Moose
The Women of the Moose began in 1913 as the Women of Mooseheart Legion. In 1922, Katherine Smith, then Director of Public Employment in Washington, D.C., accepted the call to lead the organization. She became the first Grand Chancellor and served for 38 years, guiding the group through significant growth.
Warren’s local chapter was created in 1922, the same year Katherine Smith began her leadership at Mooseheart. From its early roots to its current presence, the Women of the Moose has grown into a major fraternal network, with more than 540,000 members in approximately 1,600 chapters across the United States and Canada.
