The Women of the Moose, originally termed the Women of Mooseheart Legion, became a Moose auxiliary in 1913. At that time there was not a structured program beyond the Chapter level. In 1922 a woman named Katherine Smith, the Director of Public Employment in Washington DC for President Harding, was convinced to quit her job and run the Women of the Moose. She became the first Grand Chancellor and retained that position for 38 years until her retirement in 1964. In her term, the Women of the Moose boasted 250,000 members. Today it has grown to more than 540,000 members in approximately 1,600 chapters in all 50 states and four Canadian provinces.
Our local chapter was created the same year that Katherine Smith took her position at Mooseheart in 1922. Today we have 670 active members in our chapter.
